  4. Country Description:  Norway is a highly developed stable democracy with a
  5. modern economy.  Tourist facilities are widely available.
  6.  
  7. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  A tourist or business visa is
  8. not required for stays up to three months (the 90-day period begins when
  9. entering the Nordic area:  Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland).  For
  10. further information concerning entry requirements, travelers can contact the
  11. Royal Norwegian Embassy at 2720 34th Street N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008,
  12. Tel (202) 333-6000, or the nearest Norwegian Consulate General in Houston,
  13. Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, or San Francisco.

  15. Medical Facilities: Medical care is widely available.  U.S. medical
  16. insurance is not always valid outside the United States.  Travelers have
  17. found that in some cases, supplemental medical insurance with specific
  18. overseas coverage has proved to be useful.  Further information on health
  19. matters can be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's international
  20. travelers' hotline, Tel: (404) 332-4559.

  22. Crime Information:  Norway has a low crime rate.  Violent crime is rare.
  23. Most crimes involve burglary or theft of personal property in public areas.
  24. Weapons are rarely used.  Persons who appear affluent can become targets of
  25. pickpockets and purse snatchers.  The loss or theft of a U.S. passport
  26. abroad should be reported immediately to the local police and to the nearest
  27. U.S. embassy or consulate.  U.S. citizens can refer to the Department of
  28. State's pamphlet "A Safe Trip Abroad" for ways to promote a more trouble-
  29. free journey.  The pamphlet is available from the Superintendent of
  30. Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  32. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  33. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in
  34. illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences
  35. and fines.  Mandatory jail sentences are also routine for any alcohol abuse
  36. while driving.

  39. Embassy can obtain updated information on travel and security in Norway.
